It also had facilities like churches, administrative blocks, and hospitals inside its premises. The Portuguese used this fort as a base in controlling the whole Mumbai and beyond.

Vasai Fort History
The construction of the Vasai or Bassein Fort started long back in the 1530s. During that time the Sultan of Gujarat was Bahadur Shah who was ruling the area during that time. In 1534 he lost the control to the Portuguese governor Nuno da Cunha. It was then that he started building this fort city and developed the fort with further fortifications. Later in the time the brother of Peshwa Bajirao, Chimaji Appa and his Maratha army took over the fort in the 18th century. But the power did not stay with them for very long and it was short lived. Soon the British attacked the fort and took control of the fort under them.
